Cinnamon Extract

Cinnamon Extract Supports Healthy Blood Glucose Levels

Much more than just a simple flavoring, cinnamon can spice up your health. Derived from the bark of the cinnamon tree, cinnamon is one of the oldest remedies used in traditional Chinese herbalism for digestive support. Recent scientific studies have shown cinnamon may support healthy blood sugar levels, when used as part of your diet, by activating insulin and glucose transport and improving glucose metabolism.

Planetary Formulas Full Spectrum ™ Cinnamon Extract provides 300 mg of a 10:1 extract plus 100 mg daily of pure cinnamon bark, determined by the latest research to be optimum levels. Combining the extract and bark results in a premier formulation that yields a full range of cinnamon’s constituents. This formula is an example of herbalism at its best–uniting traditional herbal wisdom with the findings of modern clinical and pharmacological research.

Modern Scientific Research
In the last decade, in vitro studies revealed that water-extracted cinnamon might help support healthy blood sugar levels by improving the effectiveness of insulin action. An animal study showed that cinnamon extract activates insulin and glucose transport, enhancing glucose utilization. Another study evaluated the possible effects on insulin function with 49 herb, spice and medicinal plant extracts. Cinnamon was found to be the most bioactive of the herbs, which suggests a possible role in improving glucose and insulin metabolism.

A 40-day human study with 60 people, given 1, 3 or 6 grams of cinnamon daily, found that all three levels of cinnamon reduced the mean fasting serum glucose (18-29%), triglycerides (23-30%), LDL cholesterol (7-27%), and total cholesterol (12-26%) levels. The most significant results were found with 3 grams of whole cinnamon bark, the equivalent amount provided daily in Planetary Formulas Full Spectrum ™ Cinnamon Extract.

A new study demonstrated that Cinnulin PF(R), a proprietary cinnamon extract may provide protective
antioxidant effects in reducing oxidative stress associated with the metabolic syndrome which is associated with early signs of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, the study showed improved blood glucose control and enhanced body composition with the extract. The data were presented at the 47th American College of Nutrition annual meeting this month. These results further add to the growing body of research supporting the active compounds in cinnamon's role in helping to improve
insulin sensitivity in people with impaired fasting blood sugar levels.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a condition characterised by central obesity, hypertension, and disturbed glucose and insulin metabolism. The syndrome has been linked to increased risks of both type-2 diabetes and CVD.

Fifteen per cent of adult Europeans are estimated to be affected by MetS, while the US statistic is estimated to be a whopping 32 per cent.

The placebo-controlled, double-blind study was designed to determine both the antioxidant and insulin-like activity of a water-based cinnamon extract on people with impaired insulin function. Twenty-four participants with impaired fasting glucose were given either a placebo or 250mg of Cinnulin PF, twice daily for 12 weeks. The Cinnulin PF group saw a significant increase in two measures that determine antioxidant activity, including ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) and plasma SH (thiols). Additionally, the cinnamon group demonstrated a decrease in malondialdehde (MDA) showing heart health protection. No changes were observed in the placebo group.

"The results of Dr. Anne-Marie Rousel's study are extremely positive," according to collaborator Dr. Richard A. Anderson, U.S. Department of Agriculture renowned cinnamon researcher. "People with impaired insulin function are at a higher risk of developing life-threatening chronic diseases, including diabetes and heart disease, the number one killer in the U.S. This study tells us that the active compounds found in cinnamon extract may be helpful in reducing the risk of these diseases by providing
cells protection from harmful oxidation."

This study demonstrates, for the first time, Cinnulin PF's powerful effects on antioxidant status in humans and again reinforces the effects on glucose metabolism. Cinnulin PF, which was used in this study, is the only clinically tested, proprietary cinnamon extract standardized for doubly linked Type-A Polymers. U.S. Department of Agriculture researchers identified Type-A Polymers as a source of health benefits. Despite USDA studies showing the health benefits of cinnamon, researchers note that when consumed consistently or in high doses, whole cinnamon or fat-soluble extracts may not be beneficial and could be toxic. Cinnulin PF, a water extract of cinnamon, retains the active components without the potentially
harmful compounds, making it completely safe for every day use.

"Cinnulin PF provides a safe and effective nutritional solution to millions of people suffering from impaired insulin function and pre-diabetes," stated Tim Romero, executive vice president, Integrity Nutraceuticals International, maker of Cinnulin PF. "Moving forward we will continue to invest our time and resources in additional clinical studies to further validate the science in support of Cinnulin PF." Integrity Nutraceuticals International is a preferred supplier worldwide of innovative and specialty nutraceutical ingredients including amino acids, creatine, sports nutrition supplements, joint health, glucose management and herbal extracts. "This study tells us that the active compounds found in cinnamon extract may be helpful in reducing the risk of these diseases by providing cells protection from harmful oxidation," said Dr. Richard Anderson from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and a collaborator on the study.

The new study, presented earlier this month at the 47th American College of Nutrition annual meeting, adds to a growing body of research reporting that active compounds in cinnamon may improve insulin sensitivity in people with impaired fasting blood sugar levels.

The study is said to be the first to show an effect of cinnamon extracts on antioxidant status in humans and adds further support to the potential beneficial effects on glucose metabolism.

Twenty-four participants with impaired fasting glucose were recruited for the placebo-controlled, double-blind study, led by Dr. Anne-Marie Roussel from the Joseph Fourier University in France. They were randomly assigned to receive either a daily dose of 500 milligrams of cinnamon extract (Cinnulin PF, Integrity Nutraceuticals) or a placebo for 12 weeks.

At the end of the study the researchers found that plasma antioxidant levels, as measured by ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) and plasma SH (thiols) were both significantly increased, relative to the placebo group. Plasma levels of the compound, malondialdehyde (MDA), a reactive carbonyl compound related to oxidative stress, were also decreased as a result of cinnamon supplementation, but were unchanged in the placebo group. There have been toxicity concerns over consistent consumption or high doses of whole cinnamon or fat-soluble extracts.

Tim Romero, vice president, Integrity Nutraceuticals International, marketer of Cinnulin PF, welcomed the results: “Cinnulin PF provides a safe and effective nutritional solution to millions of people suffering from impaired insulin function and pre-diabetes.

According to Integrity, Cinnulin PF contains standardized quantities of the active components of cinnamon, two trimers and one tetramer classified as double-linked type-A polymers, but not the potentially harmful compounds.

Cinnulin PF is claimed to be the only cinnamon extract standardized for these compounds. Cinnamon extract could ease metabolic syndrome
